Subject: | [CPEO-BIF] Roanoke (VA) Fill from flood control project used at nearby brownfields |
Dirt from park project will benefit site nearby The Roanoke Times 11/24/07 By Annie Johnson Workers from a Roanoke construction company will soon begin digging up the land adjacent to the Roanoke River in Wasena Park thanks to Roanoke City Council's go-ahead earlier this week. The pending removal of some 170 trees and a portion of Wiley Drive has been highly controversial among some residents. But little attention has been paid to the dirt that will be moved for the flood-reduction project. It's a lot: an estimated 45,000 cubic yards of sediment and soil that will fill about 3,700 dump trucks. Enter Andy Douthat, president of Allegheny Construction Co. His workers will take that dirt and haul it down the road to the site of the old 7-Up bottling plant off Cleveland Avenue -- a brownfield site targeted by the city for redevelopment.
