Historic Portland Co. seeks a community-oriented developer By TOM BELL Central Maine Morning Sentinel December 18, 2007 Phineas Sprague Jr. is shopping for a developer for his sprawling property on Portland's eastern waterfront, possibly to build a hotel and a mixed-use residential and commercial project. The 10-acre Portland Co. complex is the largest waterfront parcel in the city east of the Casco Bay Bridge. It includes several run-down 19th century industrial buildings, a full-service marina and the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Co. and Museum. It has 1,000 feet of ocean frontage. Sprague, whose family has been involved with the Portland Co. since it was founded in 1846 as a locomotive foundry, said the decision to sell was emotionally difficult. ...
