Subject: [CPEO-BIF] Exide Battery, Fairfield, Connecticut
DEP demands plan to begin river cleanup

Connecticut Post
January 90, 2008

FAIRFIELD - State environmental officials want the owner of the former
Exide Battery plant to get the lead out when it comes to cleaning Mill

The two sides have argued for more than a year over the level of cleanup
needed in Mill River, which was polluted with lead while the battery
plant was operating from 1950 to 1981.

International Nickel Co. Inc., which owns the 6.25-acre property at 2190
Post Road, next to Mill River, wants the cleanup standard to be 400
milligrams of lead per kilogram of river sediment.

The Exide property can't be redeveloped until the river is dredged
because the property is needed as a staging area for dredging equipment,
according to town officials.
