DEP demands plan to begin river cleanup ANDREW BROPHY Connecticut Post January 90, 2008 FAIRFIELD - State environmental officials want the owner of the former Exide Battery plant to get the lead out when it comes to cleaning Mill River. The two sides have argued for more than a year over the level of cleanup needed in Mill River, which was polluted with lead while the battery plant was operating from 1950 to 1981. International Nickel Co. Inc., which owns the 6.25-acre property at 2190 Post Road, next to Mill River, wants the cleanup standard to be 400 milligrams of lead per kilogram of river sediment. ... The Exide property can't be redeveloped until the river is dredged because the property is needed as a staging area for dredging equipment, according to town officials. ...
