Worry widens if vapors leaking By BILL WICHERT Easton Express-Times (PA) January 28, 2008 HELLERTOWN - Contaminated soil at the former Champion Spark Plug factory on Main Street is covered with a cap under a layer of asphalt, but federal officials want to determine if any chemical gases from the property made their way into nearby homes. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is expected to test two residences over the next few months for the presence of trichloroethylene (TCE), one of the chemicals that entered the soil and groundwater at the site between 1930 and 1976. Exposure to TCE, which is used to remove grease from metal parts, could lead to a range of health problems, including headaches, dizziness, impaired heart function and cancer, according to the Agency for Toxic Substance & Disease Registry at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. ...
