Rendell: Sprawl Must Be 'Redirected'

Philadelphia - Gov. Ed Rendell (D) yesterday addressed the Northeast
Brownfields Development Forum held by the International Council of
Shopping Centers on the redevelopment of previously utilized lands.

"You can't curtail sprawl by looking just at the supply side," Mr.
Rendell told heads of Pennsylvania developers gathered at the
Philadelphia Marriott. "What you have to do is redirect sprawl."

Instead of paving over vast swaths of undeveloped land, the governor
said, areas already developed for defunct business projects must be
sought out. He cited the former site of Fairless Steel Works in Bucks
County, a "brownfield" area turned into an industrial park with
assistance from the state.
