Brownfield grant use disputed By SETH SLABAUGH Muncie Star Press (IN) April 10, 2008 MUNCIE -- The city's brownfields steering committee was questioned Wednesday night about its decision to make the former American Lawnmower factory and the former Car Doctors auto salvage yard top priorities for assessment and investigation. The city has received a $230,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and another $30,000 from the state to identify, assess, investigate and develop cleanup plans for local brownfields -- blighted properties that may be contaminated with hazardous chemicals. In addition, the Exide automotive battery recycling factory in Muncie has agreed to spend $92,320 on a brownfield project as part of a settlement of air violations at the plant. ...
