Hillsborough officials give key approval to transform GSA Depot property

New Brunswick Home News Tribune (NJ)

HILLSBOROUGH - Moving forward with plans to transform the 369-acre
General Services Administration's Belle Mead Depot into parkland and
space for recreation, township officials have approved the site as
property in need of redevelopment.

The Township Committee approved the measure Tuesday, after the Planning
Board recommended the designation for the depot on April 10. The
Planning Board made that determination after reviewing a report from
CME, a planning consulting firm, which stated the site met the statutory
criteria for redevelopment.

In the meantime, the Township Committee has applied for a state
brownfields grant to help transform the site into a park and recreation
area, with portions of the property zoned for research and development.
Mayor Anthony Ferrera said the township hopes to get state funding for
the estimated $17 million cost to clean up the property. A state grant
could fund up to 75 percent of the cleanup cost, Ferrera has said

The depot was an Army warehouse facility through the Vietnam War. During
World War II, the facility was used as a camp for captured members of
the Italian military. The property was then turned over to the General
Services Administration and was used until its closure in 1991.
