[Please excuse the duplicate posting, but this is a former defense facility for which the township seeks a brownfields cleanup grant. - LS] Hillsborough officials give key approval to transform GSA Depot property By PAMELA SROKA—HOLZMANN New Brunswick Home News Tribune (NJ) April 25, 2008 HILLSBOROUGH - Moving forward with plans to transform the 369-acre General Services Administration's Belle Mead Depot into parkland and space for recreation, township officials have approved the site as property in need of redevelopment. The Township Committee approved the measure Tuesday, after the Planning Board recommended the designation for the depot on April 10. The Planning Board made that determination after reviewing a report from CME, a planning consulting firm, which stated the site met the statutory criteria for redevelopment. ... In the meantime, the Township Committee has applied for a state brownfields grant to help transform the site into a park and recreation area, with portions of the property zoned for research and development. Mayor Anthony Ferrera said the township hopes to get state funding for the estimated $17 million cost to clean up the property. A state grant could fund up to 75 percent of the cleanup cost, Ferrera has said ... The depot was an Army warehouse facility through the Vietnam War. During World War II, the facility was used as a camp for captured members of the Italian military. The property was then turned over to the General Services Administration and was used until its closure in 1991. ...
