City-created Yonkers nonprofit threatened with loss of state funds Len Maniace The Journal News (NY) May 5, 2008YONKERS - The state Department of Environmental Conservation recently threatened to yank a $200,000 environmental cleanup grant from a city-created nonprofit, but has now decided to give the organization a chance to get its paperwork in order. The DEC said in a March letter it was rescinding the grant because Yonkers Brownfield Solutions "falsely represented itself as a qualified tax-exempt community-based organization, which it is not." Though it is a nonprofit corporation under state law, the agency never obtained the required federal tax-exempt status, according to the DEC. Yonkers Brownfield Solutions is one of a series of semi-autonomous corporations set up by Yonkers and its Industrial Development Agency for the purpose of pursuing redevelopment. The city works through the corporations because they provide protection against lawsuits and other liabilities, said Deputy Mayor William Regan. ...
