Will commission designate area of Fort Pierce a brownfield? By Alexi Howk Vero Beach Press-Journal (FL) June 18, 2008FORT PIERCE - Some city officials want to encourage business development in 3,900 acres that includes the Port of Fort Pierce by designating it a brownfield. But City Commissioner Reggie Sessions says the brownfield label is just a black eye on Fort Pierce's reputation. Fort Pierce officials are looking to designate the city's entire enterprise zone — an area targeted for economic growth — as a brownfield because the state designation entitles the city for development and business-expansion incentives. A brownfield is an underused commercial property where environmental hazards might hinder redevelopment. The City Commission is expected to vote on a resolution allowing the brownfield designation at a future meeting. Commissioners postponed a vote on the issue Monday as officials worked to add revise the resolution and waited on pending legislation regarding the designation process. ...
