Court upholds dump housing payout Agriculture Street landfill site used By David Hammer New Orleans Times-Picayune July 1, 2008It was nearly 15 years coming, but a ruling by the Louisiana Supreme Court handed a legal victory to thousands who sued the city of New Orleans, its public housing authority and its school board for putting their homes and school on a toxic waste dump without warning them. Now a second painstaking process begins as at least 8,000 people who lived or worked atop the closed Agriculture Street landfill wait to collect what could amount to hundreds of millions of dollars in damages. In 2006, Civil District Court Judge Nadine Ramsey ruled the city and its affiliated agencies engaged in "shocking" behavior when they developed federally subsidized homes for struggling families and built Moton Elementary on top of the old city dump. The Louisiana Supreme Court upheld that ruling Friday in a 5-2 vote. ...
