Opa-locka Airport seeks 410 new jobs

An unnamed German aviation manufacturing company considering a move to Opa-locka Airport may add to the $450 million worth of development planned for the site.

The state would contribute $2,296,000 through its Qualified Target Industry program and $820,000 more through a brownfield redevelopment bonus, while Miami-Dade would pick up the rest.

However, Opa-locka Airport isn't part of the county brownfield, according to Miguel Southwell, deputy director of business retention and development for the Miami-Dade Aviation Department.

That may not matter, though. The Beacon Council helped move the brownfield designation line so Becton Dickinson and Co. could claim more public incentives when it opened a facility in Miami. Environmental contamination isn't a requirement for naming a property a brownfield.
