County eyes Kings Park brownfield for solar farm by Joe Darrow Times of Smithtown (NY) August 7, 2008As part of his Brownfields to Solar Fields initiative, County Executive Steve Levy has offered LIPA a list of potential sites for a solar-panel system, and among them are 25 acres of Kings Park land off Old Northport Road.
For years the Kings Park Civic Association has pushed the county to clean and reuse these acres, called the Steck property, a brownfield after having been used as an illegal dumping ground. The parcels are home to no structures, just scattered truck parts, trailer bodies and abandoned machinery, surrounded by a chain link fence collapsing in places, a Levy spokesman said.
While construction and demolition debris is apparent, "nobody knows for sure what is buried there," Kings Park Civic Association President Mike Rosato said. "But it's a very, very dangerous landfill."
