MUNCIE -- A consultant has completed an environmental assessment of the city's highest-priority brownfield site, a downtown property used by industry for more than a century.

The names of businesses that have occupied the location going back to 1887 include Muncie Bagging Co., Muncie Heat, Light and Power Co., Muncie Jewelry and Plating Works, J.F. Kiser Plating Works, and Shear-Line Golf Equipment.

All but one building at the site, 401 E. Howard St., a block east of the downtown YMCA, were destroyed by fire in 2001. A rusty old building with graffiti, broken windows and one of its doors standing open is all that remains at the site, other than weeds and concrete slabs.
