SANFORD: When Sanford town officials decided to take possession of a blighted mill building by eminent domain in September, they knew they had a major project on their hands.

Two months later, the town is in the process of applying for two so-called Brownfields Grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to help pay for cleaning up the remnants of industrial pollution in and around the structure. The two grants, each valued at $200,000, would be applied to the old mill at 61 Washington St., and the former Aerofab building nearby at 3 Aerofab Drive. A private developer from Portland has been tapped to redevelop the former mill into a housing complex, with the Aerofab site slated to provide parking.

"We've got to clean them up to develop them, and if we didn't get the grant funding it would present a very difficult hurdle for us to get over," said Town Manager Mark Green last week.

Green, who characterized the playing field for such grants as "extremely competitive" at the Nov. 4 Town Council meeting, recognized the magnitude of the cleanup, but said it was not unanticipated.
