Turning a 'brownfield' green By John S. Hausman Muskegon Chronicle (MI) February 10, 2009Muskegon Township officials are pondering a proposal to convert a blighted northside tank-farm property into a wind farm and wood-to-ethanol production plant. It's far from a done deal, but if the innovative proposal checks out and works out, it could be Muskegon County's biggest economic development project in years. The hoped-for economic outcome: 100 to 150 good-paying jobs on site, with an additional 200 to 300 spinoff construction and supplier jobs. A newly formed consulting company proposes to be the catalyst for transformation of the old Zephyr Oil and Northshore Hospital properties. The adjacent 90 or so acres are a "brownfield" site on the north bank of the Muskegon River, with near-zero redevelopment prospects until now. ...
