After 25 years, Superfund site cleanup nears final phase

The cleanup, spanning more than a quarter-century, of a severely 
contaminated site in north Woburn is heading toward completion as the US 
Environmental Protection Agency is expected to approve the project's 
final phase this spring.

After the approval, cleanup of the Industri-plex site near the 
Interstate 93-Route 128 interchange could be completed in as little as 
four years, said Joseph LeMay, the EPA's remedial project manager for 
Industri-plex. Then the city can close the door on pollution that began 
during the Civil War at the 245-acre site and can start making the 
property an asset to the community.

"Then it will be long-term monitoring and maintenance," LeMay said.

The result of 116 years of chemical and glue manufacturing starting in 
1853, Industri-plex is primarily contaminated with arsenic, ammonia, and 
volatile organic compounds such as benzene. On Sept. 8, 1983, the site 
was among 14 initially put on the Superfund list in Massachusetts.
