Decades later, N.S. Superfund site is still contaminated By JOSEPH FITZGERALD Woonsocket Call (RI) February 12, 2009NORTH SMITHFIELD - Homeowners in the vicinity of the Stamina Mill Superfund site in Forestdale were reminded by federal environmental officials Thursday to continue to use care and caution using water because the groundwater table is still contaminated by the carcinogen Trichloroethylene (TCE). "This stuff spilled in the 1960s and it’s still there," Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Project Manager Byron Mah told about 15 residents during a public informational hearing at the North Smithfield Public Library. The hearing was held to update the town on the agency's ongoing efforts to clean up the site contaminated more than 30 years ago. ...The groundwater extraction and treatment system design and construction was completed in the spring of 2000, and the system became operational in May of that year. Last year, a work plan was developed to evaluate potential vapor intrusion issues near the site and field studies are currently underway. ...
