Brownfield status would provide a welcome boost East Brunswick Scarlet Scuttlebutt (NJ) February 15, 2009Somerville officials are trying to nab a "brownfield' designation for the borough's landfill redevelopment area. The designation matters because it would qualify Somerville for additional environmental investigation and remedial funding, along with other financial benefits, saving taxpayer money in the long run. It would be difficult to imagine many projects more worthy of receiving the brownfield boost, if for no other reason than to reward the borough's patience. The landfill project has been a source of hope and controversy for decades. It's the last major piece of undeveloped land in a small borough where residents face a particularly heavy tax burden. Its past use essentially eliminates an option that some people might otherwise prefer - recreational open space. There has, in fact, been relatively little dispute during the years that the landfill should be developed. ...
