NWMC sets example of community investment

Residents of Port Townsend will recall that 10 years ago the Northwest Maritime Center was a brownfield site closed to all. The collaborative effort between the port, the city and the maritime center has been about public access from the very beginning.

But "access" is way too mild a word. It is really about creating spaces that are attractive, inviting and accessible 24/7.

The shoreline boardwalk, First Federal Commons with the compass rose, and the wide second-floor decks are places that residents and visitors alike will find irresistible.

Already the forest of telephone poles in the marina and at this end of Water Street has been removed. The new maritime center and street improvements the city is planning will connect the marina historic district with the rest of the city in a powerful way.
