AVX speaks out on pollution Company says lawsuit won't interfere with cleanup efforts By David Wren Myrtle Beach Sun News (SC) February 20, 2009Executives with Myrtle Beach-based AVX Corp. said Thursday they are committed to cleaning up ground water contamination in a neighborhood near the company's headquarters despite the manufacturer's court battle with the military over who is responsible for the pollution. Evan Slavitt, AVX's vice president for business and legal affairs, told residents the company's lawsuits with the Air Force and others "won't affect the landowners" who are awaiting cleanup of groundwater laced with the industrial degreaser trichloroethylene. AVX has been paying for testing and working on a cleanup plan with the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, which hosted Thursday's meeting of community representatives and state health regulators. Those regulators said AVX will test its pollution control equipment for the first time next week to determine how much toxins are emitted into the air near its 17th Avenue South facility. ...
