Guide's Future: City contemplates plans By Aleasha Sandley Anderson Herald Bulletin (IN) March 21, 2009ANDERSON - In the past, it didn't take long for a visitor to Anderson entering from the south off Interstate 69 to realize what the city was all about. A couple miles up Pendleton Avenue - recently renamed Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard - and the visitor would be greeted by a mammoth example of Anderson's heritage: the tangle of manufacturing plants known as Guide Lamp. During its heyday, Guide employed 6,500 workers who made parts, particularly head- and taillights, for General Motors vehicles. ...Dawson said the city has had parties interested in the property, but for now the area is in no condition to be developed. It is considered a brownfield, a site that will need to be environmentally cleaned before development can locate there. GM still owns the site and is going through an environmental exploration process to determine its needs. The outcome of the assessment will determine the next steps. ...
