Sewer lines polluting neighborhood Origins of TCE may not be what once was believed By Krisy Gashler Ithaca Journal (NY) May 15, 2009A new report from the state Department of Environmental Conservation shows elevated levels of contaminants like trichloroethylene (TCE) above city sewer lines that originate from Emerson Power Transmission, Axiohm and Therm Incorporated, though a DEC engineer said the agency is not yet prepared to name Axiohm and Therm as sources of pollution. AdvertisementTwo months ago, DEC officials told the public that the pollution in their South Hill neighborhoods does not come from Emerson's fire water reservoir, as long believed. It comes from the sewers. ...Walter Hang, the environmental activist and business owner who brought attention to pollution problems near Emerson in 2004, said the pace and scope of investigation has been slow and limited. The DEC should require companies to disclose historic use and disposal of chemicals, so they can begin cleanups from the source, rather than the edges, Hang said. ...
