Consultants: Progress being made on tannery project Posted by Eric Gaertner Muskegon Chronicle (MI) May 17, 2009WHITEHALL -- The city of Whitehall's consultants for dealing with the contamination cleanup and proposed redevelopment of the former Whitehall Leather Co. tannery site impressed upon city leaders this week that strides have been made and a final step is near. During a special presentation at Tuesday's council meeting, the consultants told council members that the long-awaited environmental cleanup plan for the site is expected to be submitted and ready for public review in August or September. They also described the progress that has been made over the years, leading to the cleanup of Tannery Bay and the expected cleanup of the former tannery site. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and Genesco, the former owner of the company that is responsible for the cleanup, are still working on the final major issue for the cleanup plan -- what to do with the tannery's waste lagoons. ....
