Subject: | [CPEO-BIF] Elevator sampling at IBM, Endicott, New York |
[We've heard for some time that elevators may pull toxic vapors from the
subsurface up into the upper floors of buildings, yet at IBM the
elevator TCE readings are comparable to what is normally found in
outdoor air. Does anyone have evidence elsewhere of seriously elevated
elevator results? Seriously. - LS]
Report: TCE not leaking into elevators BY TOM WILBER Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin )NY) MAY 20, 2009ENDICOTT - Air in elevators on the Huron Campus tested positive for traces of TCE, but not at levels suggesting they are an accomplice to high concentrations of the toxic chemicals migrating under the building, according to a report from state environmental officials. Chemicals are not likely coming up into Building 18 through the elevators, but they are going down through the shallow aquifer into the bedrock, said William Wertz, a geologist with the state Department of Environmental Conservation. That, and the migration of TCE from under the former IBM Campus on North Street into other parts of the neighborhood, continues to create a hazard that must be cleaned at its source, he said. ....TCE concentration in Building 18 elevators ranged from 0.41 to 0.22 micrograms per cubic meter, according to an analysis of samples collected last month. ....
