Waterbury eyesores may finally get cleaned up BY PENELOPE OVERTON Waterbury Republican American (CT) June 13, 2009WATERBURY -- Environmental contamination in the Brass City is so widespread, local people say, that all you have to do to find it is stick a shovel in the ground. Anywhere. Now, after years of talk and study about cleaning up the city's old industrial sites, visible progress is being made for the first time since the transformation of the former Scovill Brass Mill into the Brass Mill Center mall more than a decade ago. In fact, it appears the city is about to enjoy an explosion of cleanups on contaminated and underutilized industrial sites known as brownfields. Prospects include the old Chase Brass & Copper Co. mill, empty textile factories in the Cherry Street Industrial Park and the old Mattatuck Manufacturing Co. factory. ...
