Michigan rejects Brownfield tax credits for 28th Street Meijer store,
but Grand Rapids may grant project local Brownfield status
Jim Harger Grand Rapids Press (MI) June 15, 2009GRAND RAPIDS -- Calling it a "big box," state economic development officials have rejected Meijer Inc.'s bid to get $1.25 million worth of Brownfield tax credits for the new store it will build at 28th Street and Kalamazoo Avenue SE. But city Economic Development Director Kara Wood is urging city commissioners to declare the site a Brownfield on their own, making it eligible for $1.16 million worth of local tax breaks. Wood will ask commissioners to set a July 7 public hearing on the designation when they meet Tuesday. Meijer spokeswoman Stacie Behler said the Walker-based chain is "disappointed" in the Michigan Economic Development Corp.'s (MEDC) rejection of its request last week. ...
