New strategy pays dividends Half of Axiohm wells register drop in toxic chemicals By Krisy Gashler Ithaca Journal (NYU) July 1, 2009A toxics-removal strategy that's new to South Hill is showing some initial success at the former Axiohm factory. In half of tested wells, toxic chemicals in groundwater have decreased or disappeared, according to a report on the first testing conducted after implementation of the new cleanup strategy. The Axiohm site, formerly a factory of National Cash Register, is now the South Hill Business Campus. South Hill Business Campus entered the state's voluntary Brownfield Cleanup Program in 2005 and completed a site investigation that documented trichloroethylene, or TCE, of up to 5,300 parts per billion in soil vapor samples below the parking lot and 270 ppb below the building, according to a DEC database. In groundwater, TCE was found at levels up to 2,200 ppb. ...
