Contamination At New Park Site Raising Concerns Jason Aubry KKTV News 11 (Southern Colorado) July 16, 2009The ground-breaking ceremony to turn Pueblo's Lake Minnequa into a park and recreation area is about a week away. But some residents are concerned about how contaminated land around the lake will be dealt with. When city officials were thinking about purchasing the land, they expected to find contamination around the lake. The reality is, they found very little. In fact, they only found two areas of contamination that needed to be cleaned up. The biggest area is a site the steel mill may have used decades ago to get rid of a small amount of steel by-product called slag. Originally, the steel mill owned all 225 acres around the lake. The gray slag material is only found in a small 1.6 acre patch on the east side of the lake. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, this patch of earth will need to be cleaned up if the city want's to turn it into a park. "The EPA through their contractor tested the material, and there was three elements that exceeded the state standards," says Scott Hobson with the cities Planning and Development department. ...
