Cleaners struggle to keep land clean By SUSAN DeMAR LAFFERTY Chicago Sun-Times News Group (IL) August 3, 2009Dave Betscher has been in the dry cleaning business for 25 years and prides himself on his squeaky clean record. He's not just referring to the clothes he handles but more importantly to his environmental efforts. Recent news about Crestwood's municipal well being tainted by dry cleaning chemicals has given his industry "a black eye," he said. "It's enough to scare anyone." Unfortunately, when Betscher bought Plaza Cleaners in Frankfort in 1992, he was not aware of previous ground pollution, he said. That contamination and similar contamination found outside the 50-year-old Hutchins Cleaners in New Lenox is no risk to public or private wells in Frankfort or New Lenox, according to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. ...
