Project designed to purge toxic plume in north Montgomery By Jill Nolin Montgomery Advertiser (AL) August 9, 2009Ten years after a contaminant was found in the groundwater in north Montgomery, a project that will create a natural purging system for the chemical is ready for construction. AdvertisementThe contractor, McDonald Construction of Union Springs, has started setting up for the construction project. The project, which costs $4.7 million and is also a stream restoration project, is scheduled to be finished by May 15, according to Alabama Department of Transportation project engineer Ashley Cousins. ....The TCE does not present a health risk as long as it stays 10 to 15 feet beneath the surface of the ground, which is why the state is also creating an "institutional control program" that prohibits property owners from digging wells or even installing an in-ground pool without the state's approval. The TCE has had no effect on the area's drinking water, Cousins said ....
