NGM Exclusive: NJDEP up close and personal with the Pompton Lakes community by Mayble Abraham New Green Media August 27, 2009Pompton Lakes - Representatives of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) warmly greeted the 10 residents that trickled in at a morning public meeting last Friday. NJDEP Community Relations Coordinator Mindy Mumford answered questions from the small group regarding the ongoing cleanup of contaminated Pompton Lakes. Many noticed the stark emptiness of the Pompton Lakes council room and accordingly requested Mumford to schedule another meeting between the NJDEP and the community in the evening when people are not working. Pompton Lakes is the bearer of toxic chemicals like tricholorethene (TCE) that were discovered underneath homes in the 1980s. TCE exposure adversely affects the nervous and immune system and is "highly likely" to cause cancer according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The explosives manufacturer DuPont used TCE since the 1900s as an industrial solvent. ...
