Another Round of Contamination Assessments for Safeway Property By Michelle Dynes Wyoming Tribune-Eagle (Waterworld) September 8, 2009CHEYENNE -- The groundwater contamination at 25th Street and Thomes Avenue will get a second look this fall. Earlier this year, state lawmakers approved $2 million to begin environmental assessments of Wyoming's highest priority orphan sites. Cheyenne's site contains solvents that may have been dumped as far back as the 1950s, Bonnie Pierce from the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality said. The identified solvents are often used by dry cleaners. But it's difficult to track down the source when the problem is decades old and whatever business may have stood on the site is long gone. With no responsible party, the site was labeled as an orphan under the 2000 Orphan Site Remediation law. The legislation also required DEQ to create an inventory of every known orphan site in the state. ...
