New Westminster plans waterfront park on toxic land BY NEAL HALL VANCOUVER SUN SEPTEMBER 9, 2009METRO VANCOUVER - The City of New Westminster plans to create a waterfront park on land east of New Westminster Quay that was contaminated over the years by a coal-fired power plant and other industrial use. One resident, Christopher Bell, has expressed concern that the city plans to rezone land as an urban park that contains a cocktail of heavy metals, volatile compounds and toxic substances. "The city's own consultants have reported that the site investigation is far from complete and the level of risk analysis has not occurred," Bell said in a letter to the ministry of the environment. But New Westminster communications manager Blair Fryer said Wednesday that the city plans to fully remediate the site so it's safe for public use. ...
