Cleanup ads, signage part of new DEP rule on contaminated sites By Siobhan A. Counihan Gloucester County News (NJ) September 8, 2009An influx of environmental investigation and cleanup notices running in the newspapers, including this one, is the result of a new notification rule enacted last year, according to state Department of Environmental Protection officials. The notices have been appearing en masse in local newspapers and detail the type of remediation action taking place at contaminated sites. "What you're seeing is a new community outreach effort on the part of the DEP to make sure that people in the community are aware of contaminated sites and progress on cleanups," said state DEP spokesman Lawrence Hajna. The notices range from sites as large as the Valero Refining Co. in Greenwich Township, where a comprehensive groundwater extraction system has been installed to address potential groundwater contamination of petroleum hydrocarbons, down to the former Mullica Hill Gas Stop, where a leaking underground storage tank and septic system caused contamination. ....
