Long process awaits Marina Center Development Thadeus Greenson Eureka Times-Standard (CA) September 16, 2009Months and months in the making, the Marina Center development's draft environmental impact report is tentatively scheduled to come before the Eureka City Council next month for certification. The stop in City Council Chambers is just one of a litany of hurdles the project, and its interim cleanup plan, must clear in order to bring the 43-acre Marina development to fruition and transform the blighted, contaminated Balloon Track property into a mixed-use development that proponents hope will breathe new life into Eureka. CUE VI, a subsidiary of Security National, purchased the Balloon Track in 2006 and is proposing the construction of a development that will include retail and office spaces, as well as an 11-acre wetland reserve. The project drew controversy from the start, much of it swirling around the property's environmental legacy, which includes stints as a rail yard and an above-ground fuel storage facility, which combined to leave contaminants like heavy metals, petroleum hydrocarbons, dioxins and polychlorinated biphenols. ...
