Sustainable
Long Island will be hosting a Breakfast, Long Island’s Brownfields:
Accelerating the Redevelopment of Superfund Sites. The program ill on
Friday October 2, 2009 from 8 AM – 10 AM at National Grid 25 Hub Drive,
Melville, NY.
This
has been an issue Sustainable Long Island has been trying to find solutions
over the past few years to modify the NYS Brownfield Program, and is very much
in line with the discussion that have been occurring on Center for Public Environmental
Oversight's Brownfields Internet Forum.
Since
the adoption of the Brownfield Law, Long Island has lagged behind other regions
of New York in having sites enter and complete the brownfield cleanup
program. However, Long Island’s groundwater issues, along with our
development pattern, have created the greatest number of NYS Superfund sites on
Long Island, with over 100 sites still requiring ongoing remediation
efforts. Our goal is to identify the changes needed to the Brownfield
Cleanup Program that will speed the cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated
sites on Long Island. Until the brownfield cleanup program issue is
resolved many Long Island communities will have prime real estate hindering
revitalization efforts and placing burden on our environment.
The
panel will discuss the benefits of allowing NY State Superfund class 2 sites
into a voluntary brownfield program. Panelists will provide their view on
the issue and the concerns that need to be addressed to prevent abuses of the
system and address a model that best cleans up contaminated sites for
redevelopment.
