Former dump is planned site for downtown transit village in Somerville By Mike Frassinelli Newark Star-Ledger (NJ) November 15, 2009Refrigerators and bodies of cars are buried underground. The occasional copperhead snake slithers above ground. And dead trees have been ground into woodchips. It doesn't seem like much right now, but Colin Driver looks at the closed former town dump and sees the future of Somerville. Economic Development Director Colin Driver walks on a closed former landfill near the Somerville train station. The landfill was just approved as a brownfield area and is one day expected to be the site of a transit village that could be the most significant project in decades in the town that bills itself as "Somerset County's downtown." The property is the planned site for a transit village, a mixture of residences and retail stores that would be built around Somerville's historic train station, which is undergoing a major facelift of its own. ...
