City to consider off-site PCE comparison study

The Bozeman City Commission will consider authorizing a second, off-site 
study in conjunction with its investigation into whether dry-cleaning 
fluid vapors migrated from a Superfund site into nearby homes.

The city has already decided to study whether the vapors, which are 
suspected of causing cancer, migrated from the Superfund site at the 
Hastings shopping center on West Main Street.

A separate study of air quality in homes outside of that area, known as 
the Bozeman Solvent Site, could serve as a baseline, spelling out what 
"normal" levels of those vapors are commonly found in homes, Public 
Works Director Debbie Arkell said.

The Bozeman City Commission is scheduled to vote on the second study, 
which could cost $125,000, on Monday.

The city, in partnership with CVS Pharmacy, agreed to test the indoor 
air in around 20 homes near the solvent site after a study this past 
summer found levels of PCE, or "perc," in the area exceeded those 
allowed by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality.
