Meijer site cleanup ready to begin 41,000 tons of contaminated soil will be removed By WILLIAM F. AST III Southwest Michigan Herald-Palladium December 6, 2009STEVENSVILLE - The cleanup of the site of the proposed Meijer store in Lincoln Township could start as early as this week. The Lincoln Township Board at a special meeting Friday approved terms of a $1.5 million loan from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to fund part of the cleanup. And once the MDEQ approves the work plan, the cleanup can start, officials said at the meeting. "One big step," township Supervisor Dick Stauffer said as the Township Board meeting concluded. Afterward, the Lincoln Township Brownfield Authority Board at another special meeting approved additional loan details. As that meeting adjourned, the township's lawyer for the loan said he'd just gotten word that Meijer officials had closed on the site purchase with the land's owner, LECO Corp. ...
