New wells traced to old problems in Springdale By Angela Carella Stamford Advocate (CT) December 9, 2009A landfill that may be contaminating residential wells in one part of Stamford is making headlines, stirring up old concerns in another neighborhood. Just as the Scofieldtown Road landfill predates most of the homes in North Stamford, Springdale grew up around Machlett Laboratories, once a thriving manufacturing plant on Hope Street. Machlett was high-tech in its day, producing X-ray and television tubes and sensitive equipment used in medicine, space exploration and warfare -- including parts for the atomic bomb. As the city installs water lines to 100 homes with tainted wells in North Stamford, Springdale residents over the last couple of weeks have noticed trucks drilling holes at Greenway and Ryan streets, in the block thatonce was the site of the Machlett plant. It now is the parking lot for Stamford Twin Rinks, and the drilling is part of regular testing ordered by the state Department of Environmental Protection when the Raytheon Co. of Massachusetts sold the property to rink developers about five years after the Machlett plant closed in 1989. ...
