State finds elevated cancer rates in pollution plagued Pompton Lakes
neighborhood
BY JAMES M. O’NEILL AND ELAINE D’AURIZIO The Record (NJ) December 11, 2009Kidney cancer rates in women and non-Hodgkins lymphoma rates in men are significantly elevated in a Pompton Lakes neighborhood perched above contaminated groundwater, according to a new study issued Thursday by the state Health Department. The kidney cancer rate has been elevated for 30 years and the non-Hodgkins lymphoma rate has been elevated for 13 years, the report said. Neighborhood residents have lived for years above toxic chemicals that have been vaporizing through soil and potentially into their basements. The pollution has migrated south from a DuPont munitions plant closed in the mid 1990s. Because the two cancers were not elevated for both men and women, the state cannot make a conclusive link between the higher rates and the chemicals found in the groundwater plume under about 430 homes. Still, the report says that "the contaminants can not be ruled out as a potential cause of the elevated rates." It noted that those same chemicals - the chlorinated solvents TCE and PCE - have been linked specifically to kidney cancer and non-Hodgkins lymphoma. ...
