Waukegan lakefront 'shovel ready' for cleanup EPA discusses dredging, bioremediation plans Comments By FRANK ABDERHOLDEN Waukegan News Sun (IL) December 19, 2009WAUKEGAN -- The city's toxic lakefront is getting closer to being repaired to make way for redevelopment. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said progress is being made on addressing the last of the problems at the lakefront Superfund site. That includes Waukegan Harbor, the former gas and coke plant and Outboard Marine Corp. Plant No. 2. ...Demolition of the final 600,000 square feet of OMC Plant No. 2 will cost about $21 million, funded by a federal economic stimulus grant. PCBs, trichloroethylene (TCE) and asbestos must be removed before most of that building can be demolished by Tecnica Environmental Services and Brandenburg Industrial Services Co., both minority-owned businesses from Chicago. ...
