Public meeting to be scheduled concerning cleanup of historic Kenneth
Smith property
Staff Report Shawnee Dispatch (KS) January 28, 2010A public meeting will be scheduled to discuss clean up efforts at the former Kenneth Smith Golf Club Manufacturing property, 12831 W. 71st St. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has asked the owners of the property, the Eva S. Smith Revocable Trust, to go through a Voluntary Cleanup and Redevelopment Program after finding metal contamination at the site. Residents surrounding the property discovered a public notice concerning the cleanup plan and the state is now working to schedule an informational meeting in February. Kenneth Smith Golf Clubs were produced from 1936 to 2003 at the site, earning their fame because they were not mass-produced; each set was unique, made to each client's specifications. Those clients included the rich and famous -- Bob Hope, Sammy Davis Jr. and Mickey Mantle, as well as presidents like Lyndon B. Johnson and Dwight D. Eisenhower and royalty like the King of Morocco, Hassan II. In late 2004, the city approved rezoning the property from residential suburban to single family residential for Rodrock Development's Fairway Park, an 86-lot single-family subdivision. The development would require the destruction of the buildings on the property. ...
