NUMMI site a jewel that could take decades to shine By Matthew Artz Oakland Tribune (CA) April 5, 2010FREMONT - When General Motors Corp. set up shop in Fremont 48 years ago, the company was building cars and trucks in an unpopulated and inexpensive Bay Area backwater. There was no Silicon Valley, no BART and no Oakland A's. Even Interstate 680, just east of the plant, was still under construction. But when the last Toyota Corolla rolled off the NUMMI assembly line last week, it did so firmly within the boundaries of the nation's largest technology corridor and the Bay Area's fourth largest city, where the average home fetches more than $500,000. The NUMMI site is about as prime as East Bay real estate can get, developers say. The plant sits on 370 acres - about the size of downtown San Francisco - sandwiched between two freeways and less than a mile from a BART station scheduled to open in four years. ...
