State DEP signs off on Act 2 cleanup site in Perkasie

After approximately 11 years, the site of the former Stainless and 
Wispese properties in Perkasie have officially been declared "cleaned up."

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection recently signed 
off on the two Ninth Street properties, now home to the headquarters of 
the First Savings Bank of Perkasie.

The signoff means that the property officially meets the DEP's 
requirements for levels of trichloroethylene (TCE), the contaminant that 
was found in high levels in the groundwater on the properties initially.

The only remaining issue on the property is that the water is not 
potable, but because the entire borough is on public water, that is not 
an issue, said Perkasie Borough Manager Dan Olpere. The borough did pass 
an ordinance in December that prohibits wells in an area of the borough 
near where the TCE plume is located in the groundwater, to be sure that 
no one constructs a well in that area.
