Taking Root: Land Tenure and Community Gardens in Providence, Rhode Island by Robert Hersh CPEO and Worcester Polytechnic Institute July 2010For three decades, the Southside Community Land Trust (SCLT) in Providence Rhode Island has carried on the long, but under-recognized tradition of community gardening in the United States. It has employed multiple strategies: the outright purchase of brownfields and other vacant properties, partnerships with affordable housing organizations and watershed groups, education and outreach to promote community gardening beyond individual garden plot holders, and organizing politically for more secure land tenure.
