At the LaBour Pump facility, it's addition by subtraction
Residents near the long-standing abandoned facility on Elkhart's east 
side are happy to hear the din of demolition crews at the pump factory.

ELKHART -- For the residents of the city's Sterling Avenue neighborhood, 
there are no tears shed for the decades-old building being torn down 
near their homes.

Here, there's little lingering nostalgia for the former LaBour Pump Co. 
facility, long one of the city's biggest eyesores. And the structure's 
neighbors are more than happy to see it come down.

"It has sat there empty, unused for a long time," said Ray Bair, a 
neighborhood resident and former pastor at Belmont Mennonite Church. "It 
really hasn't served any useful purpose for the community. This is a 
hopeful thing to have happen."

The Sterling Avenue building is one of two blighted buildings the city 
is paying to have demolished this year, along with the former Elkhart 
Foundry & Machine Co., 318 S. Elkhart Ave.
