NJDEP extends comment period for new DuPont permit Suburban Trends (NJ) August 15, 2010The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) will extend the comment period for a new permit DuPont must get for the ongoing cleanup of its contaminated site in the borough. This comment period was extended after an environmental group called the Pompton Lakes Residents for Environmental Integrity (PLREI) requested that DuPont and the NJDEP explain what this new permit is all about. Residents want to keep strict watch over DuPont during the cleanup because toxic vapors from groundwater have been extending into their neighborhoods. A public notice was published in the July 25 edition of the Suburban Trends, notifying the community that DuPont is applying for a new permit for the onsite groundwater pump-and-treat system in operation on its property that keeps volatile organic compounds from migrating off the site. This new permit would require DuPont to report to the NJDEP less frequently on the pump-and-treat system. At the Aug. 11 Borough Council meeting, Citizens for a Clean Pompton Lakes founder Lisa Riggiola told council members they should be concerned about this change, because its approval would mean less oversight on the cleanup. ...
