Residents, Lockheed Martin on brink of settling contamination case BY RONNIE GREENE Miami Herald (FL) September 14, 2010For years, the residents of tiny Tallevast, Fla., have waged a fight for survival after discovery that a 200-acre pollution plume seeped into their groundwater from a shuttered beryllium plant. And they have turned to Lockheed Martin for justice. This month, a decade after the leak of cancer-causing chemicals was discovered, the historic black hamlet and Fortune 500 company agreed, in principle, to settle a property contamination lawsuit on the eve of trial. That legal battle, brought by 270 residents against companies that owned or operated the plant, said the homeowners' health and property were imperiled by the failure to tell them of contamination from beryllium and other toxins. The main hazard in the underground plume is TCE, a cancer-causing agent used to degrease plant parts. The suit, slated for Manatee County Circuit Court in October, offered the potential to open a window into one of the nation's most emotional environmental divides. Instead, the settlement -- following court-mandated mediation -- closes this chapter in the struggle. ...
