Old Spofford factory in line for cleanup

CHESTERFIELD, N.H. -- State and local officials are in the beginning 
stages of cleaning and refurbishing a former Spofford factory building 
following an environmental assessment of the property earlier this spring.

The goal is to renovate the old building and get it back on the market 
and position the property so a developer would likely utilize it once again.

In the first phase of an environmental site assessment of 409 and 411 
Route 9A in Spofford Village, Ranson Environmental Consultants, of 
Portsmouth, conducted a visit in April to the brownfield property to 
review its condition by performing an "all appropriate inquiry" into 
previous ownership and uses of the buildings. The assessment goal is to 
identify and recognize all environmental concerns in connection with the 
property, which has been the subject of federal and state investigations.

"The brownfield site, tucked in the heart of historic Spofford Village, 
has benefited from extensive cleanup by the [U.S. Environment Protection 
Agency] and the state of New Hampshire," according to a letter from the 
Chesterfield Board of Selectmen. "Still conditions are such that it is 
likely to remain a brownfield without some assistance to make it more 
attractive to the real estate market."
